Book Review#3. - World War Z

An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks

"It began with rumours from China about another pandemic.  Then the cases started to multiply and what had looked like the stirrings of a criminal underclass, even the beginnings of a revolution, soon revealed itself to be much, much worse.  Faced with a future of mindless, man-eating horror, humanity was forced to accept the logic of world government and face events that tested our sanity and our sense of reality."

It's difficult to say where this choice of title came from, I have to admit to the guilty pleasure that is the Zombie movie but I had never considered reading a book about them, until recently.  It wasn't until the news story broke that Brad Pitt was heading to Tunbridge Wells (home of the day job) to film part of his new movie, World War Z that my interest was piqued.  A quick google search and I had the author, Max Brooks and before long I was fully submerged in the eerie world of the undead.  Eerie is definitely a good word for this seemingly unrelated series of anecdotes by the survivors of the war retold after the ten year fight back from near extinction.  As the pace quickened I kept finding myself believing that this was possible, told as it was, in such a familiar narrative.   After my initial concerns and doubts, there is clearly an intelligence behind this latest contribution to the zombie files and I have to admit that I'm absolutely hooked.  An unreserved four crowns!

  6. The downed pilot was definitely a favourite although I also liked the idea of a Chinese nuclear powered submarine cruising around the oceans with its own hydroponics garden; mad but brilliant.

  7. I agree great book - too bad the movie will probably make a cocked hat of it. I particularly enjoyed the section on the Japanese gardener and the South African's 'plan' - very dark.
