Village Rice Barn

One final Bushido post to see out the month.* This was a lovely little kit from ‘4Ground’ and given its discreet footprint, perfect for our smaller Bushido board.  I know that the seemingly unchecked march of the MDF terrain piece onto gaming boards up and down the length of the country is not to everyone’s taste but, as I have mentioned before, I really enjoy putting these kits together.  They really are very clever and provided that you don’t rush at them, relatively straightforward to assembly.
*Is it really June already?
With the addition of a couple of hand carts my Bushido themed month has come to an end.  Rest assured we are still enjoying our weekly meet at school, although the imminent examination period is starting to demand more and more of my table top gamers’ time.
That said I am hoping to run the club again next year and have started assembly of some further additions to the Savage Wave that were picked up at Salute this year.  So hopefully more to come on this theme in the future, who knowns perhaps even a game report?  However for the time being all focus will be shifted to ‘Forgotten Heroes’ and a truly bizarre change of topic!

  3. Lovely barn and carts, I don't see how you can knock the mdf out at the moment, it increases the range available and makes it more economical and accessible and if you really don't like it don't buy it!

  4. What a lovely piece of terrain. Well done Michael. Did you think about weathering the barn a bit? Not that it's necessary but I know the splendid terrain pieces you created from scratch so the barn might gain from some further treatment from your gifted hands...

  7. Whilst many MDF kits leave me cold (mainly because of visible tabs and the lack of detail), the 4Ground Shogunate Japanese series - of which this barn is one - are exquisite. They're fun to build, too - very clever design.

    1. I have to confess, the rest of this range is proving hard to resist.

  8. By the way, it is really easy to improve the teddy-bear fur thatch by a little dry-brushing - see here: https://arteis.wordpress.com/2017/01/06/home-improvements-to-4grounds-japanese-shogunate-houses/

    2. @Dick Garrison: Thanks Rodger. I've looked at the rules, Google-fu'd one thing and spotted something completely different that I believe I can convert to fit the parameters. It just depends on buying a miniature, receiving it in time and then fitting it around my workload. I'll see what I can do. Roy

  11. Lovely work as always Michael, though I too am a little surprised you didn't turn you talented hand to weathering it a little, you see you've set the bar too high for yourself with your other scenery we expect perfection now!

Thanks for the "Forgotten heroes" plug by the way, so glad you're on board again.

    Cheers Roger.

  13. The quality of MDF scenery really depends upon how much work you're willing to put into them. You always do a great job with them as with this one.

  14. Unlike many MDF kits this one doesn't show it's heritage in obvious joints and tabs at corners which is my main beef with them. Looks good mate!

  15. Nice little kit. The beauty with MDF kits of course is you can add your personal touches with most of the main effort done for you. Which is always a winner!

  16. Very nice. I can imagine a couple of rats looking out of the shadow of the barn smiling with grains of rice falling from their mouths.

  20. A very nice piece of kit, Michael. Whilst not everyone likes MDF buildings, the variety and 'finish' you can now get gives every level of hobbyist the option to have some nice looking terrain on the table.

And I can't wait to see what you've chosen to do for 'Forgotten Heroes'!

  21. Personally I'm a fan of mdf. It's relatively hard wearing, not all that expensive if you shop around and people's designs have been really impressive for the most part.

4Ground make some of the better mdf kits out there and your examples reinforce that.

Your Bushido tables must be a fun sight for young gamers to experience their early games upon! It'll be memories like that that'll make a curious youngling into a life-long gamer. (Girl and alcoholic pursuits aside!)

Hope the new crop will be just as enthusiastic Michael. :)

  23. It's a shame all good things must come to an end, but I already look forward to your next project.
Personally I enjoy putting these MDF kits together, they're not that different from the cars and planes I did in my youth.
Your barn and cartoon look outstanding, I like it a lot.

  24. This piece of terrain looks fantastic! But with those gremlins around I guess you will need to "set fire to the roof" soon with cotton smoke effect or the likes. :)
