28mm Flashman & his Lady

It will come as no surprise to regular readers of this humble weblog that on completion of the final chapter of the current reading material,  a spate of frenzied activity is often to be witnessed here at 'Awdry Towers' as I scour the lead pile for something suitable to represent recently shelved story.

If the truth be told this example had already been spied at 'Salute 2013' in readiness for just such a moment, but sadly I had left it too late in the day to purchase him and the vendor, 'SHQ Miniatures' had sold out.  Unperturbed at retuning home empty handed, (if only that were true!) I duly ordered the elusive miniatures from the company's website and before long Flashman himself dropped onto the doormat.

These are great fun, characterful sculpts perhaps even bordering on the comic, befitting of the characters from the story.  Flashman resplendent in his cricket whites, sabre slung over his shoulder looks every bit the gentlemen, but Elspeth, his lovely wife has an expression that suggests that she is less than impressed with our cowardly antihero.

The miniatures are reassuringly 'chunky' and although perhaps devoid of the extensive detail that we have come to expect from current sculptors were still hugely enjoyable to paint up.  They are, however, a little on the tall side!  Listed as 25mm, they dwarf a Perry American Civil War rioter positioned next to the happy couple for the purposes of scale.  Still a fun addition to the diverse and ever growing collection and good to see a little Victorian frippery once again gracing the pages of '28mm Victorian Warfare'

  5. A delightful duo, though I must say, dear Elspeth, far from looking a damsel in distress, seems more likely to cause a fair bit of distress herself! I wouldnt like to meet her in a alley on a dark night put it that way. Solid is not the word! ;-)

BTW, if you ever come across someone doing the figures from the novel The Pyrates, by the same author, I'd be interested in a set...

    1. Thank you Anne, I actually used a couple of different recipes for the white to give him a bit of variety.

    1. Thank you, white is certainly a pig to paint, I am always surprised at how many layers it requires.

  12. Chunky but very nice indeed none the less. I often find the bigger figures are easier to paint than the smaller ones.\

As already said the white is excellent and they are both a cracking pair of characters.

  17. Her facial expression is just superb! Reminds me of my wife when something I do doesn't go according to plan: "I've told ya from the beginning...!" and so far and so forth. :-)
    Great painting anyway!

  23. Well done Michael. I have most of the Flashman books waiting to be read & he does make a fantastic character to use in Victorian Steampunk style games..thus thanks for the link on the company to purchase them from. Cheers!

    1. Thank you Terry, a steampunk Flashy, now there is an idea! The figures have an 'old school' charm to them, but I think you find it difficult to find similar sized miniatures to match. It might be fun converting some of the splendid Empire of the Dead range.

  25. Two very wonderful figures, well painted and good composition on the basing.

Might I make one little suggestion (and I feel bad about even mentioning it)?

On the Elspeth figure I think the red-brown undercoat or shadow should be removed and use a more subtle transition from dark to light flesh in order to bring out the femininity of the figure. The same goes for the excessive eye shadow that she is wearing. Harry's flesh transitions look a little more natural to my eye.

Oh dash it all! I really do not like to offer up any criticism on what is otherwise a fine looking figure. I hope no offense is taken.

    1. Fritz, my good man, absolutely no offence taken let me assure you. I think you are absolutely right with regards to the undercoat on Elspeth. I've always struggled with female miniatures and the subtlety required to create the desired effect. I may have to revisit her at a later date though as an awful lot on the go at the moment.

    2. I agree that women are hard to paint. For every one that I paint and like, there are probably 3 or 4 that I didn't paint very well.
