Euro Militaire 2012

Saturday saw myself and then 'Provost Marshal' head off to sunny Folkestone for our annual pilgrimage  that is Euro Miliatire.  Whilst this is primarily for your Military Modeller as opposed to your Wargamer there is always something to be inspired by.  This year's competition entries seemed to be of an even higher standard than that of the previous year's (if that was possible!) with much more emphasis being placed on the basing.  You can but marvel at the skill on display and I often find myself torn between inspiration and despair in equal measures.

Althoug almost impossible to pick a favourite, I did love the dioramas and vignettes; there were even some 28mm miniatures on show!  In the end I just photographed anything that caught my eye and have published some below for all to enjoy.  Sadly, I didn't jot down the names of the owners, but my goodness they were fabulous.

I had told myself that I wasn't going to buy any models this year, looking instead to just pick up some basing materials and tools, but oh know, the 'Provost Marshal' had other ideas!  A couple of days before the show, he sent me a link to the 'Tommy's War' website.  Some might remember that last year I had picked up one of their wonderful First World War models, well this year they launched another range, 'Deeds that Thrill the Empire'.   The first model being a vignette of the battle of Spion Kop and for reasons that I will be going into more depth later, I just had to have this impressive looking set.  A huge thank you to the 'Provost Marshal' for getting us safely there and back in time for some liquid refreshment.

  1. I agree wholeheartedly with your label Michael. I wish I was there. I'm almost speechless looking at all this, awestruck. It takes what we do and elevates it to an art form.

    Enjoy your new painting project!

    2. I felt that way as a drummer after I'd seen Buddy Rich play live. I put down the sticks for a week, I was so depressed. I've learned that even though I'll never be that good, I should still strife for it and become the best that I can be.

Would you mind very much if I posted a link on Benno's forum to this post. This is an homage to painters and to sculptors and I think people would enjoy the pics, which you've done a fine job of taking.

  10. Great Photo's, good to see the models I missed because it was crowded. I had better discipline on the purchase front, a whole pack of boxes of miliput (an annual tradition) and one of those £11 angled guillotine cutters - which I've promised myself for a while.
Next time we should have a sherbert. I've put just over a hundred up on mine: http://6milphil.wordpress.com/2012/09/24/euro-miltaire-2012/

  15. What Michael failed to mention was the very nice Full English he treated us to earlier in the day - my Django's special hot chocolate was to die for! I do have to admit that I made him photograph just about every model of Murat on show. I've done Euro for about 20 years, and the skill of the modellers just seems to get better each year. The wonderful Andrea Miniatures 54mm Invisible Man can be seen on the Historexagents website.

Thanks to Michael and SMA buying me a few beers in the local that evening, I nodded off when I got home and missed out on a 3rd Empire Guard Chasseur's sabretache badge I was bidding on!!!!
Nevertheless, a great day out with great company.

  16. A very impressive array of modelling and painting skill there... Must admit I enjoyed making kits and stuff as a kid but was always left wondering what to do with them now... there's only so much display space one has at home for static displays that won't then get used - that was why I switched to wargaming, at least then the models also have a 'use'...
