Dry Stone Walls

A fairly self-explanatory post this morning as I head up the mighty metropolis that is Ashford for some zombie themed shenanigans with that splendid chap the 'Dark Templar'.  These are from 'Warlord Games' and were originally sold as part of their 'Rorke's Drift' set, something I still want to get my hands on!

My first impressions were not favourable, particularly when looking at the amount of air bubbles that needed to be filled and excess plastic that had to be hacked away.  That said, it was clear that they were a good looking sculpt and I was hopeful that they might yet prove their worth.

Plenty of dry brushing and flocking later and they war complete, I just need to rediscover the damaged versions that I have put in a safe place!

  1. They look very fine. When you find the ones in your safe place, please check to see if the packs of hurricane lamps I have put in mine have not migrated!

  2. They've painted up very nicely! I hope you find the damaged walls without too much

  3. I don't know if you'll personally feel they were worth the effort, but they're the best-looking model dry-stone walls I've seen. Quite reminiscent of the ones where I grew up, though we didn't have fancy corners like those!

    1. That is incredibly kind of you, and yes once the damaged was repaired I was delighted with how they turned out. I seem to have a love/hate relationship with Warlord Games at the moment.

  4. Always useful, although the air bubbles were a frustration of main also.

  5. That is a lot of prep work to have to do. However, if they look this nicely finished it was worth the effort. Have a good game!

  7. They doo look good and you have done a fine job on them. But all that extra work puts me off. I think I would have to make my own.

    1. Thank you Clint, not sure which way would be quicker though, home-made of patched up?

  10. You have achieved some great results with these Michael. Can't say i'm surprised re the casting issues. I don't buy from Warlord anymore after they twice sent me a platoon's worth of infantry which were horribly miss-cast.

    1. Thank you Mr. Smillie and that's quite a horror story. I find them very frustrating as a company, just seem to have got too big too quickly!

  12. You did a great job on these pieces and they really look the part. As always I'm slightly put off by the rubbish WG want to sell us as high quality castings for high quality casting prices. Reminds me a bit of some other Nottingham based company...

    1. I couldn't agree more, so very frustrating because ultimately they have a good product to sell.

    1. They certainly did, I could have painted them brown and repackaged them as a certain air filled brand of confectionary.

  16. You certainly turned them into great looking terrrain - particularly after seeing the air bubbles at the top. Very, very useful terrain for many scenarios. Best, Dean

  18. Wow Warlord seems to expect you to put a lot of time in fixing their mistakes! But as a stalwart hobbyist you have taken up their miscast challenge to produce a wonderful set of stone walls. Your ECW village is really coming to life. When will we see a game of Witchfinder General?

  20. Lovely stuff Michael, especially given the less than mediocre casting you starting with

BTW I just completely emptied my Man Cave and adjoining abode of everything and still haven't been able to relocate my 'safe place'!

    1. Thank you Paul and I know just what you mean. I wouldn't mind so much, but we only have limited space here at 'Awdry Towers' they really shouldn't be that hard to find!

  22. You can't go past a good dry stone wall. I love mine and they get used all the time over a massive range of periods and locations. Nice one sir.

  28. Some tidy work in rescuing a rather substandard casting - although the basic design looks OK, it must have been galling to see that many bubbles!

You've overcome it though, and they look splendid. Well done!

  33. Turned out excellent, Michael.
Since the walls are available individually I shall think about them for Dark Ages, Napoleonics and the 20th Century wars...
