Flushed with the success of the previous post it seemed only appropriate that I had a stab at completing the Command Group for the Indian Mutiny Naval Brigade. Once again these are from 'Mutineer Miniatures' and hugely enjoyable they were to work with. The group is made up of two officers, one mounted, and two Boatswain's (or Bosun's) Mates, one with the ship's monkey perched on his shoulder!
I couldn't resist giving their lovely whites a little wear and tear, particularly at the base. This was achieved by using Games Workshop's 'Devlan Mud'; do they still do this? The secret, such as it is, is to do the first layer of 'mud' and when dry do a second nearer the base. I like to think that this gives the illusion of the mud soaking up the leg of the trousers.
"We named the monkey jack" |
I took a few liberties with the mounted officer, such as giving him civilian riding boots, thinking that, as a rule, riding boots would not normally be issued to Naval officers.
Finally a photograph of the unit together; it is terrifying to think that both sets were bought a 'Salute 2011' and here we are counting our pocket money in readiness for 'Salute 2012'; oh well I guess I will just have to have the Naval Brigade Artillery Crew and maybe an elephant and .... Oh no 'Shinybloodyitis' has struck!
Looking good Mr Awdry! Love the mate with the monkey (but I guess everybody loves a monkey companion).
ReplyDeleteDevlan Mud has been "replaced" by Agrax Earthshade in the new Citadel paint line. It's quite similar, although it seems to have a touch less black in it.
Enjoy Salute!
Cheers
Dave
Thanks Dave and for the tip off on the Devlan Mud. If all else failed I was going to try some windsor & newton burnt umber. Salute here I'm come!
DeleteGreat! I really liked these miniatures.
ReplyDeleteNicely done sir. Love the Bosun's especially the one with little Jack looks like he would fit in well with some other pirates
ReplyDeleteOh Pirates, now there is a good idea! ;-) Thanks you Sir!
DeleteThose are great and great facial hair on show, you can trust them because of that alone!
ReplyDeleteVery nicely painted and presented, Sir. I sense...in my modeling-force...that you a special "something", when it comes to choice of color and manipulation of pain-brush-tool. May the force be with you!
ReplyDeleteWhy thank you Sir! May the force be with you too!
DeleteVery nice looking figures, good poose and well painted.
ReplyDeleteAs said above, Earthshade is the new Mud. Disapointing if it is a different shade as I was told they would be exactly the same as before. Typical GW I suppose. I hope to get some next time I am in Nottingham
Ian
"Look!(BANG!) One not dead monkey!!" Some of the best lines are based around the monkey. I like the man nad his monkey, I like em all but the nag...that is one lovely sculpt and you´ve done a cracking paintjob on..(quick look..) Him.
ReplyDeleteCheers
paul
Many thanks Paul, I have to agree with about the monkey, he certainly was a scene stealer. The horse was a real 'pig' to clean up, lots of flash and lines, but having invested so much time into it I tried a little harder on the paint job.
DeleteTerrific work Sir!! Love the Bosun and his pal Jack. Top work!!!
ReplyDeleteThese figures are very stylish! Great painting!
ReplyDeleteMore wonderful work, sir. Not helping me to resist buying these! :-)
ReplyDeleteThat fellow with the sword looks like he's got a real bad attitude! My favorite is the shoulder monkey! I've always wanted my own shoulder monkey
ReplyDeleteFab-U-lous
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff! I rally do like the expression on the face of the bosun who has Jack sitting on his shoulder.
ReplyDeleteI really do like the paint job on your horse. I just wish I could get my nags to look half as good as that!
Another lovely painted couple of figures as always. Should be useful for most colonial periods.
ReplyDeleteThey really are the business - alright you have sold me on these - they will be sourced next weekend i think now
ReplyDeleteAhoy, avast mateys, cringe me nurgles and other salty sayings (though the last is more Goon Show than Naval)!
ReplyDeleteThey are excellent, Michael! I'm with Paul; while the men are wonderful, your animals are the stand out in this bunch
They are lovely figures and the paintjob is top notch.
ReplyDeleteOn the Delvan Mud front, GW have stopped doing it.
Splendid work mate, love the monkey detail, and the mounted officer is great, nice tones on the horse.
ReplyDeleteVellejo do a 'Devlan mud' equivalent, available from Maelstrom,... look under their washes (dark brown I think its called)
Naval Brigades have always been my favourite unit, whether it be VSF, colonial, Napoleonic of whatever (did you know its was Navy chaps who first used Gatling guns in the Zulu War? Clever fellows!)
ReplyDeleteI like monkey boy too!
Excellent painting and basing as per your usual! Great work on the straw hats.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the excellent pictures. They represent the excellent look of your miniatures!
ReplyDeleteCheers
Monty
Wonderful painting Michael! Love the monkey.
ReplyDeleteTruly excellent paint work there, the mounted figure and petty officer with the monkey is great.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful paint jobs on those. I think the use of the Devlan Mud on the trouser cuffs worked very well. One day I need some Royal Navy for my Legends of the High Seas gaming. These look like just the ticket.
ReplyDeleteStunningly beautiful! Best, Dean
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! They are all lovely but the mounted officer is a wonder! But if I get any of these that will be three lots of Naval brigade I will have painted for three armies and all those lines on the collar drive me mad!! I must finish my Indian Mutiny line infantry so I can get started on my Gurkhas!
ReplyDeleteWow they are fantastic looking figures and very well painted...excellent work.
ReplyDeleteFatastic painting, especially the horse colors do it for me.
ReplyDeleteWhat's not to like. Fantastic group Michael, well done
