A Post Apocalyptic Family

It is funny how the smallest thing can spark a series of thoughts that can lead to a subtle change of direction - sometimes there is nothing subtle about it at all!  Just the other day, I received an email from the good people at Amazon to notify me that 'The Walking Dead' series 3 was available for pre-order.

Now I was very late on this show and had only finished watching my box set of series 2 whilst series 3 was already underway here in old Blighty.  Having decided not to rush you can imagine my excitement at hearing news that more celluloid cadavers were heading my way - this called for a celebration!

And so it was the 'Rich and Family' (as 'Studio Miniatures' have surreptitiously named them) saw themselves promoted through the massed ranks of the painting queue.  I have managed to convince myself that these, and the set that will follow shortly, are only the smallest of distractions as they do at least pertain to the zombie apocalypse!

As with my previous experiences with 'Studio Miniatures' they were great fun to paint, although the 'not Carl Grimes' was a touch problematic given his stature and my fixation with trying to replicate the Atomic Paw logo on his T-shirt!

In fact it soon became a bit of a mission to base all three on America's number one, post zombie apocalypse family - I such a sucker for a television or movie tie-in!  Roll on September when I can finally get my hands on series 3 - now no spoilers please!

  1. Series 3 Currently being shown on Channel 5 Sunday nights and available on Demand.

Nicely painted and very characterful. As you say only a little side-track and a little of what you fancy does you good. keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more walkers and survivors.

    1. Many thanks for the heads up, but I think I'll wait until my box set arrives and take it at my own pace. Taking a quick look at the painting queue it does seem to be predominately undead fodder at the moment!

  7. I've never seen you move through this many figures so quickly Michael. The show has certainly inspired you on a creative level.

    1. It certainly has Anne, I just love the dynamic between the group and the obvious parallels that one can't help to make; which character would best represent me, that sort of thing.

  16. That's some impressive painting there. I see you did get the atomic paw on Karl's shirt, great job with that! Will you complete the whole cast? I think Studio Miniatures makes a large portion of the cast in miniature I'm sure you can find figures to fill out the rest. Oh season 3; you'll like it more than season 2.

  19. WOW Mike, fantastic work on the plaid shirt! You will need to share your tricks of the trade on that! I wouldn't doubt a company comes out with a boxed set of the characters & then of course MORE Zombies!

  24. I could tell it was the 'not'-Grimes family even before reading the text! Excellent work on not-Carl's shirt in particular and the whole family in general.

I want to give away series 3 sooooo much!....When Laurie(SHUSSH!)...or when Carl(STOP NOW!)...or the time when Glen and Maggie(ENOUGH!)...

Oh well, Bad Lip Reading Walking Dead again instead http://youtu.be/jR4lLJu_-wE

  27. Lovely paint jobs (I'm envious as ever!) and great figures, except for Carl which is a horrible mini - his legs are far too short and make him look more like someone who is height-challenged rather than a kid. (Note to Mister Designer - back to anatomy lessons for you!) :-)

    1. Sorry, forgot to say - he's also far too short. Sheesh, everyone's a critic ;-)

    2. That made me laugh! You are absolutely right of course, I remember while painting him that his holsters were in danger of dragging along the ground!
