Lead Beasties!

As this was only supposed to be a minor distraction, I had decided relatively early on that I wasn't going to invest a huge amount of the 'hard earned' into lead dinosaurs, choosing instead to build up what was needed with, ready painted toy beasties.  Retrospectively, I think we can all safely agree that went horribly wrong, especially given the amount of prehistoric inspired plastic, roaming across the dining room table of 'Awdry Towers'; the Saintly Mrs. Awdry is not amused!

Plastic is all well and good, but I'm an inquisitive soul by nature and just couldn't help wondering what it would be like to have a go at painting my own dinosaurs and before I knew it, I had found myself perusing the pages of 'The Honourable Lead Boiler Suit Company'.  At just £4 for two Ornithomimus miniatures it seemed churlish not to give this a try and the results of this experiment can be seen before you.  There was a moment of mild panic when I realised that there wasn't going to be a handy 'Osprey' title with clear illustrations to guide me, but then it dawned on me that I could jolly well paint them whatever colours I wanted; after all who could argue?

Having finished the pair, I just can't help thinking that I need a few more to make up a herd and then of course there was the Velociraptors, the Pachycephalosaurus and the ... oh no it's happening again!

  1. Beautiful work but I've shown these to an amateur palaeontologist and he's horrified and fascinated all at once:D

  4. Lovely painting on those beasties. Much more fun (and interesting) than simply grey or green.

  8. Good ones I've always had a cap set for Victorian Dino Hunting, since reading 'Saurian Safari', may be in the future (I've a nice Queen Vic model with a shotgun.) Sounds like my memsahib is of the same mould as yours (LOL).

  10. By jove they are good!! As you say no-one can argue with the colours and you´ve chosen some cracking ones for these beasties. After seeing your collection I´m trying to find a poor excuse to fit them into a medieval scenario..I´ve got a stack of little plastic ones from when my son was into them..st george and the plesiosuarus? Terence and the Teradactyl?
    Cheers

  16. Fantastic! Very striking! I have also been wondering about whether to paint my plastic dinosaurs and I thing, seeing yours, I may undercoat my stegosaurus tomorrow!

There may not be an Osprey for dinosaurs but there is something quite close: Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Creatures by Dougal Dixon and published by Hermes House. Lots of interesting colour schemes in it!

  18. I like the bright colors you've used. They look so cute I would like to buy some to.
NOT! You're not going to buy new things before you've painted all the rest you have. That will be at least three reincarnations to get everything done! :-D

  19. Nice to see some LBS dino's painted up so stylishly!

This could lure me into the psuedo-historical (well for a hardened fantasy nut like me anyway) world of Victorian Dinosur safaris...

Always had a hankering to game the 1975 version of the Land that Time Forgot.
